Thursday 13 October – The Shine (1996): The film tells the true story of Adam Geflott – a child prodigy who becomes a concert pianist only to break down and retire to an institution in Australia. Many years later he manages to return to the concert hall. Geoffrey Rush is excellent as the adult Adam.
Thursday 10 November – Of Gods and Men (2010). A group of Trappist monks living, working and praying in a Catholic monastery in an impoverished community in Algeria are threatened by fundamentalist terrorist. It is the 1990’s and the civil war in Algeria and the monks are forced to confront their role and purpose. Sub-titles.
Thursday 8 December – Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008) A middle aged governess is unfairly dismissed. An attempt to regain employment finds her catapulted onto the glamorous and dizzy world of an American actress. Set during the war a delightful comic romance.
Thursday 12 January – Days of Heaven (1978). An early Richard Gere film set at the turn of the century. He is a hot tempered farm labourer who persuades his girl friend to marry their rich but dying boss so that they can have a claim to his fortune. Only events look as if they are turning out differently.
Thursday 9 February – Life is Sweet (1991) A sublime slice of family life in a north London family from Mike Leigh. All the expected actors in a Mike Leigh film as well as the gentle humour and insight that is his hallmark.

Thursday 8 March Motor Cycle Diaries (2004) Dramatisation of a motor cycle trip across South America by Che Guevara and a friend that showed him his life’s calling. A sensitive and beautiful film based on the diaries of the two men and directed by Walter Sales who directed Central Station which we enjoyed three years ago. Sub-titles.
Thursday 12 April - Leon (1994) A twelve year old girl, the survivor of a gangland killing, is rescued by a professional assassin . Set in USA but directed by a Frenchman, is a taught drama/thriller with a great script.
